What is Social Bookmarking?

“Social bookmarking is a user-defined taxonomy system for bookmarks. Such a taxonomy is sometimes called folksonomy and bookmarks are called tags.Unlike storing bookmarks in a folder on your computer, the marked pages are stored on the Web and accessible from any computer.”

Social bookmarking allows users to store, organize, search and manage bookmarks of web pages. Users record links to web pages they like or want to share, using a social bookmarking site to store these links. These bookmarks are usually public and can be viewed by other members of the site where they are stored. Examples of social bookmarking sites include del.icio.us, digg.com, Tumbler.com, Medium.com and many more.

Most social bookmark services are organized by users who apply "tags" or keywords to the content of a website. This means that other users can view the bookmarks associated with a chosen tag and display information on the number of users who tagged them. In many cases, users can also comment or vote on bookmarked items.

Social bookmarking is also called indifferently folksonomy, collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing and social tagging. "Folksonomy" is a combination of the words folk and taxonomy. Therefore, folksonomy is a taxonomy generated by a person or a group of people.
