A search engine is a software, usually accessed on the Internet, that searches an information database according to the user's query. The engine provides a list of the results that best match what the user is looking for. Today, there are many different search engines available on the Internet, each with its own capabilities and features. The first search engine ever developed is considered Archie, which was used to search for FTP files and the first text-based search engine is considered Veronica. Today, the most popular and well-known search engine is Google. Other popular search engines include AOL, Ask.com, Baidu, Bing and Yahoo.

How to access a search engine

For users, a search engine is accessed through a browser on your computer, smartphone, tablet or other device. Nowadays, most new browsers use an omnibox, which is a text box at the top of the browser that shows the address and is where you can also search the Internet. You can also visit one of the main pages of the search engines to perform a search.

How a search engine works

Visual search engine exampleBecause large search engines contain millions and sometimes billions of pages, many search engines not only search the pages but also show the results according to their importance. This importance is commonly determined by the use of several algorithms.

Example of a visual search engine As illustrated in the image on the right, the source of all search engine data is a spider or crawler, which automatically visits the pages and indexes their content.

Once a page has been tracked, the data contained on the page is processed and indexed. Often, this may involve the steps below.

Delete the stop words.
Record the remaining words on the page and the frequency with which they appear.
Register links to other pages.
Record information about any image, audio and media embedded in the page.
The data collected above is used to classify the page and is the main method used by a search engine to determine if a page should be displayed and in what order.

Finally, once the data is processed, it is divided into one or more files, moved to different computers or loaded into the memory that can be accessed when a search is made.

Do all search engines give the same results?

Not necessarily. Search engines use patented algorithms to index and correlate data, so each search engine has its own approach to find what you are looking for. Your results can be based on where you are, what else you have searched for and what results other users who seek the same preferred, for example. Each search engine will weigh these factors in a unique way and offer you different results.

What is the best search engine?

There is not a search engine that is better than everyone else. Some people might argue that the Google search engine is the best and is probably the most popular and known. Often, if someone asks how to do something or what something is, another person will suggest that they "look it up in Google". "Google", used as a verb, means searching for results using the Google search engine.

The Microsoft Bing search engine is also popular and is used by many people. Bing does an excellent job of finding information and answering questions. The Yahoo search engine, although not as popular as it used to be, still does an excellent job of finding information.
